10 Ways to Use Technology to Age Well

From  /
Technology is advancing at a head-spinning pace. It seems like only yesterday that we were seeing ads on the television for something called the Internet.

Now, can you imagine life without it?  Every day, innovations in tech make life easier, and may even help you age better. Here’s how.

Prioritize your health. It’s never been easier to learn about topics related to health, including diseases, treatments, prevention and more. Today, you may not even have to leave your house to see the doctor because you can interact with medical offices around the world via telemedicine. Need to refill a prescription? Look no further than the app on your phone. Want to stay fit and healthy? Download a fitness and food tracker that will challenge you to stay on top of your game.

Improve your vision with an app. Forget your reading glasses? You can download a magnifying app and use it to read a menu when you’re out and about. If you have trouble seeing at night — or if you’re in a restaurant that’s especially dark — you can use a flashlight app to bring a little more light into your life.

Set reminders and track your medications. If you’re having trouble remembering to take your medications, you can download a tracking app that will keep you on schedule. You can also use your phone’s alarm or calendar function to remind you to do certain tasks, like take the trash out on Tuesdays.

Stay connected. Keep in touch with family and friends through networking sites and video chats. Just remember to actively engage with people — don’t just passively read their posts and updates and throw out the occasional “like.” Communication will always be a two-way street, and healthy relationships need to be nurtured.

Stay safe. A number of applications could save your life in the event of an emergency. Apps are available that store important medical device and contact information for family members and physicians. You can even download a tracker app to let family members know your whereabouts, if you’re concerned. And there are emergency apps that will send a message if you need help.

Be mindful. Mindfulness is a popular approach to managing stress. By downloading an app, you may be able to bring a sense of calm into your life and participate in breathing exercises and meditations.

Create a timeless soundtrack. Want to access all of your favorite tunes? Just log onto a streaming music service and you can travel back in time to the first concert you attended, school dances, your wedding and any other memorable moments.

Take a ride. Now that ride-sharing is available driving is becoming less of a necessity. Download an app and you can get an inexpensive ride to the grocery store, doctors’ appointments or anywhere you need to go. Just pinpoint your location and a driver will be there soon!

Find volunteer opportunities. Search online for openings in your own community. Many cities and organizations offer websites that match interested volunteers with meaningful endeavors that can make a lasting impact.

Keep learning. You can enroll in free online university classes, sign up to learn a foreign language, discover new recipes, try out cooking techniques and more without even leaving the comfort of your couch.
